Chelation Therapy And The Environment
Why Everyone Needs Chelation Therapy
Part I
by Ron Manzanero, M.D.
I would like to discuss the benefits of chelation not only for the treatment of disease, but for preventive and anti-aging purposes as well.
Chelation is a type of medical therapy where a chemical, EDTA, is infused into the body intravenously, along with vitamins, for the purpose of eliminating toxic metals like lead, aluminum, mercury, arsenic, and cadmium. EDTA — along with other chelating agents like DMPS, DMSA, D-penicillamine, and alpha lipoic acid — has the ability to bind toxic metals and take them out of the body. EDTA also has an affinity for certain minerals like calcium and other metals like iron.
While many studies over the past 50 years have demonstrated the benefits of chelation therapy for coronary heart disease, my focus here is on the universal problem of environmental toxic metal exposure.
At a recent conference on immunology that I attended, world renowned neuro-immunologist Aristo Vojdani, Ph.D., from UCLA Medical Center, stated that of all the functions in the body, the immune and nervous systems are the most sensitive to toxic chemicals. He added that toxic metals cause abnormalities in all aspects of immune function and even cause autoimmune disease. Kono, et al, in The Journal of Immunology, 2001, stated that toxic metals like mercury are potent immune stimulators capable of causing “overt systemic autoimmunity.” Dr. Vojdani also talked about toxins triggering the inflammatory phase in multiple sclerosis, and published a study in the Journal of Internal Medicine, 2003, demonstrating autoantibodies to nerve tissue in multiple sclerosis. It has been shown that toxic chemicals are major instigators of autism (International Journal of Immunopathology and Pharmacology, 2003). Also, the University of Calgary produced a video demonstrating the devastating effects of mercury on brain neurons.
How do we accumulate these toxic metals? From the air we breathe and water we drink. Also, consider that vaccines are preserved with a toxic mercury compound called thimerosal, and dental “silver” fillings are 55% mercury. We were probably exposed to lead from paint years ago, which our bodies stored in our bones. What happens as we age and our bones become thinner?
The medical profession needs to redefine “toxicity.” Leading scientists like Dr. Vojdani are demonstrating that you don’t have to be at death’s door to be considered “toxic,” but that any level of toxic metal exposure can lead to immune and nervous system dysfunction!
Chelation therapy is the only proven and safe way to eliminate toxic metals and chemicals. In my opinion, in order to achieve an optimal level of health, everyone today needs some form of chelation therapy periodically. There may be other benefits as well: Blumer and Reich showed that EDTA chelation reduced cancer incidence by 90% in 59 patients over 10 years (Environmental International, 1980). Iron oxidation in the body causes stiffening of the elastin fibers in our skin and arteries. Chelation is a potent chelator of iron as well, and thus may serve to slow the aging process!
In summary, we are all exposed to environmental toxins that are known to cause immune and neurological dysfunction. Periodic detoxification with EDTA chelation therapy is a safe and proven way to promote optimal health.
